Disney is getting serious about mobile game development, but will it come at the cost of pre-existing mobile games such as LINE Disney Tsum Tsum?
Disney has recently announced at gaming conference Casual Connect USA that it will partner with some heavy hitters in the mobile game development space — Glu, Gameloft, Ludia and PerBlue. These companies will each begin working on unannounced titles based on Disney franchises.
Disney has been rethinking its strategy when it comes to gaming. Last year, they suddenly shuttered both Marvel Heroes (by the now defunct Gazillion Entertainment) and the Marvel Tsum Tsum app (by XFLAG).
Prior to that, Disney suddenly shut down the developer of Disney Infinity, leaving players in limbo and scratching their heads as to why Disney would shut down a profitable game franchise (hint: it wasn’t profitable enough.)
So with all of this restructuring, we have to wonder how long the well-loved LINE Disney Tsum Tsum app has left to live. The app has a near cult-like following on Facebook, but with Disney seemingly pushing the Tsums to the backburner in favor of new brands like Ufufy, its possible that continued support for the aging Tsum Tsum app won’t be part of Disney’s mobile strategy going forward.
Let’s just hope that Disney and LINE make the app available for offline play whenever they decide to pull the plug, unlike Marvel Tsum Tsum. Players have dumped tons of real money into the game over the years, and it would be pretty terrible to be locked out of playing it altogether.
Disney plans to get into many more gaming genres, according to an article on Venture Beat…
(…) Disney is focusing on new genres, and it is willing to venture into role-playing games and brawlers, as well as new platforms such as Steam on the PC.
(…) Disney is willing to experiment and fail going forward, but it plans to be patient. Disney continues to work with Square Enix on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III, a big console title coming this year that mixes the characters from Disney and Final Fantasy franchises.
The new titles from these developers have yet to be announced.
Casual Connect USA is currently happening at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calfiornia.
