Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Breaks Box Office Records

Disney's Beauty and the Beast breaks box office records

Belle was the belle of the box office this weekend as Disney’s highly-anticipated fantasy film “Beauty and the Beast” smashed box office records.

The live-action adaptation of the classic 1991 animated film waltzed its way to a $170 million opening weekend in North America, with an additional $180 million in overseas ticket sales. It’s the biggest March opening of all time, even smashing the record set by “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” last year.

Apparently the small amount of online outrage over the sexual orientation of Josh Gad’s LeFou was a non-issue for most moviegoers.

Between the studio, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar, Disney is absolutely dominating the box office right now. Last year, Disney had 5 films that topped $300 million at the box office, leaving competitors in the dust.

Naturally, more live-action adaptations of classic Disney animated movies are on the way, including “The Lion King” and “Dumbo.” One remake we probably won’t see is Bambi, but just imagine what kind of film it would be if we did!
