The Sanderson Sisters are back… but they will apparently be played by other people.

Deadline has broken the story that Disney is planning a TV movie sequel to the 1993 cult classic Hocus Pocus. But the project is apparently moving forward without Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy.

The new take is being written by Scarlett Lacey (The Royals), with David Kirschner, producer on the original movie, on board to executive produce. (…) The new Hocus Pocus iteration will have a new cast and a new director. Ortega, who has directed Disney Channel’s two biggest TV movie franchises, High School Musicaland Descendants, is not involved.

So it sounds as if the original Sanderson Sisters will not be involved, despite the fact that they’ve expressed interest in reprising their roles. Being a TV movie, they probably just don’t have the budget to bring them back, which is a shame.

Still, it’s great that Disney is keeping the IP alive. We suspected that something was up, as the Sanderson Sisters have played an integral part in Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in recent years.

There’s no word on a release date, but we’re betting it will drop around Halloween next year or the year after.

I've loved Disney as long as I can remember. As a former newspaper editor, web developer, and Disney comics freelancer, I'm able to combine that experience into writing about Disney online. I'm also the co-host of a Disney fan podcast called 'Pirates & Princesses.' Opinions mine.
