Marvel Studios' CAPTAIN MARVEL Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson)

While it’s not the Captain Marvel trailer some fans were hoping for, we’re getting a much better look at the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

But the follow-up to Avengers: Infinity War is actually a prequel to the MCU saga, and features the first time a female lead headlines a Marvel movie.

(…) Captain Marvel takes place in the mid-’90s, long before Steve Rogers was defrosted or Tony Stark built his first suit. That allows the film to introduce younger version of familiar Marvel faces — like Jackson’s Nick Fury, who’s still a two-eyed S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey — as well as let Carol carve out her own, unique space in the MCU.

“This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection,” says Boden, who’s the MCU’s first female director. “But what makes her special is just how human she is. She’s funny, but doesn’t always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn’t always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity — and all of its messiness.”

In the film, Brie Larson plays Carol Danvers, a pilot turned intergalactic superheroine who was first introduced in comic book form in Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (1968) and has had a long (and convoluted) history in the Marvel Comics.

In the film, Danvers will go up against the Kree and the Skrull, classic Marvel villains. Also making an appearance is Ronan the Accuser, last seen (and defeated) in Guardians of the Galaxy.
