MCU News: Live-Action ‘Squirrel Girl’ is Cast… but it’s not “Barb.”

Poor Barb, indeed.

The unbeatable Squirrel Girl is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but she won’t be played by Stranger Things actress Shannon Purser.

Squirrel Girl will be front and center in the upcoming Freeform series the New Warriors, which will also see the inclusion of Speedball, Night Thrasher and more into the MCU.

She’ll be played by actress Milana Vayntrub, who currently stars in the series This Is Us.

From The Hollywood Reporter

Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) has landed the breakout role of Squirrel Girl, while Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler will stay in business with Freeform after landing the role of Mister Immortal in Marvel’s first live-action scripted comedy.

The duo lead the ensemble cast in the 10-episode series about six young people learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates. Joining Vayntrub and Theler are Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.

Several actresses lobbied to play the part of Doreen Green, aka Squirrel Girl, a fangirl who has the power of… squirrels. The most notable was Shannon Purser, who played doomed friend Barb on Netflix’s breakout hit Stranger Things. The internet was behind her, but it wasn’t meant to be.

New Warriors joins Cloak & Dagger on Freeform (formerly ABC Family), with both series taking place in the same shared universe as the Marvel Studios films, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Netflix series Daredevil.
