Could the King of Wakanda (and the box office) be coming to Walt Disney World?
That’s a rumor being perpetuated by insider Jim Hill on the Disney Dish podcast, who says that Disney is thinking of bringing Black Panther to the Wonders of Life pavilion in Epcot, of all places.
According to Hill’s sources, the new roof panels on the Wonders of Life pavilion could be for a Wakanda environment, as the fictional African country is surrounded by a domed force field. This work could also explain why the building is not being used as the Festival Center for the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival as in previous years.
It’s an interesting rumor. However, it should be pointed out that the Black Panther is an Avengers character, and likely falls under Universal’s jurisdiction in Florida. Whether or not Disney can get the rights back for Black Panther is debatable.
UPDATE: Now some other news outlets are speculating as to whether or not Universal has the rights to Black Panther based on his appearance in some artwork in Islands of Adventure.
The Marvel / Universal Studios deal is pretty complicated, but if it seems to focus on character groups rather than individual characters. And with that being said, the Black Panther has long been affiliated with The Avengers… which is tied up with Universal. Some are saying that Disney may find a loophole to get the rights to just the Black Panther, but I find it unlikely. However, money talks and if Disney is willing to throw down some cash for T’Challa, then who knows?
I wouldn’t hold my breath, however.
We talk about this, and other Disney rumors on this week’s episode of Pirates ‘N Princess. You can listen in the player below.
