I saw a rumor circulating for a couple of days now. It seems that actress Lupita Nyong’o may be returning as Maz Kanata in the upcoming Han Solo film.
We already knew that the upcoming, un-named, Han Solo film would be about pre-Episode 4 Han Solo and would be taking place sometime between the Prequels and Original Trilogies. We also knew that Alden Ehrenreich was cast to play Han Solo, Donald Glover would be playing Lando Calrissian, and Joonas Suotamo would be portraying Chewbacca. It was also previously announced that the following actors would be playing new characters in the Star Wars universe: Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
So, where did this Maz rumor come from then? Apparently, around the time of the San Diego Comic Con podcaster Steele Saunders, interviewed Funko employee “Mark”, about upcoming Star Wars Funko merchandise. Mark stated “Emilia Clarke, Lupita Nyong’o, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, whether I like Han Solo or not that’s a cast that you really cannot, you know, you’ve got to be excited about that casting alone.” One of these names were not previously mentioned in connection with the Han Solo movie project. With the release of the film being May, 2018 Funko should already be producing licensed tie in merchandise, and with that “slip” the rumor was born.
Currently we know that Maz Kanata will have a small part in the upcoming Star Wars film The Last Jedi, but she has still not been confirmed in the Han Solo project. It’s possible that this whole thing was simply a miscommunication, but I think given Maz’s supposed history with Han, it would make a lot of sense to put her in the stand-alone film.
What do you think? Will Maz be in the upcoming Han Solo film or was it simply miscommunication? Comment and let us know what you think!
