Disgruntled Indiana Jones fans who were unhappy with Shia LaBeouf’s role in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull can breathe a little easier now.

It’s been confirmed by screenwriter David Koepp that LaBouf’s “Mutt Williams” will not return for the fifth Indiana Jones movie.

Koepp spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Indy 5

““Harrison plays Indiana Jones, that I can certainly say,” screenwriter David Koepp, who has penned a script for the fifth film in the storied Indiana Jones franchise, tells EW. “And the Shia LaBeouf character is not in the film. We’re plugging away at it. In terms of when we would start, I think that’s up to Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Ford,” he said. “I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post… If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.”

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was much derided by fans of the franchise, and a lot of the blame was placed on Shia LaBouf’s Mutt Williams — a “greaser” character who turns out to be Indiana Jones’ son — as well as the plot, which involved UFOs and aliens.

The next Indy film will supposedly focus on Jones’ replacement, who will not be Mutt Williams as implied in Indy 4.

Since Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Shia LaBouf has seemingly run afoul of Hollywood, so it’s no surprise that Disney / Lucasfilm would not include the controversial actor.

LaBouf and Ford came to blows publicly back in 2010 when Shia disparaged director Steven Spielberg in an interview with the LA Times. Ford shot back by calling LaBouf an obscenity.

The current release date for Indiana Jones 5 is July 19, 2019, but that could easily change.
