‘Star Wars Battlefront II’ – Does the new trailer hint at where The First Order came from?

The Star Wars celebrations continue, even in video games. A trailer for EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II dropped over the weekend and it’s absolutely amazing. It looks like the game will have a single-player story mode, and the story is one that would make a great movie. In fact, it could be argued that the trailer for Battlefront 2 is better than the trailer for The Last Jedi.

The trailer shows the leader of a group of Imperial special forces being stranded on the forest moon of Endor after the Rebels destroy the Death Star II. Lost without their Emperor, the band of Imperial elites sets out to get revenge on the Rebellion. It even leads them to a confrontation with the last Jedi knight, Luke Skywalker.

From the official website

Forge a new path as Iden Versio, commander of Inferno Squad—an Imperial special forces unit equally lethal on the ground and in space. Encounter many of Star Wars ‘ greatest characters in a story of revenge, betrayal, and redemption that spans 30 years.

What does Battlefront 2 have to do with The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi?

Since Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, they’ve tried to bring order to chaos in regards to all the Star Wars tie-in media. As such, they discarded the old Expanded Universe and have started anew with comics, books, TV series and video games that are 100% canon.

The trailer is interesting because Iden Versio’s voiceover explains that she’s been waiting 30 years to take revenge. In fact, the opening shots of the Battlefront 2 trailer shows The First Order, not the Galactic Empire.

Also, the Inferno Squad uniforms look an awful lot like The First Order’s taste in decorating — black with a blood red stripe.

Is it possible that the revenge-seeking Inferno Squad eventually forms the foundation of what will become The First Order?

Could this hologram-faced mystery man be Supreme Leader Snoke, ready to bankroll The First Order?

Could this hologram-faced mystery man be Supreme Leader Snoke, ready to bankroll The First Order?

I think it’s highly likely, considering we really don’t know much about The First Order than they sprung up out of the remains of the Empire. This game is canon after all, and crosses all eras of Star Wars — the OT, the prequels and the sequels.

It’s unlikely that we’ll get more than a few sentences of explanation as to where The First Order came from in The Last Jedi and Episode IX. So it will fall to tie-in books and games to fill in the blanks.

We’ll find out on November 2017, when Star Wars Battlefront II is finally released.

Star Wars Battlefront II will feature new worlds and new characters from all three trilogies, including Kylo Ren.

It’s released a month before the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
