Disney has purchased two very expensive Super Bowl commercial spots this year. But what are they going to be promoting?
Now, Disney has a massive slate of upcoming tentpole films. Choosing only two to promote is pretty difficult. The conservative bet would be Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, as both movies are just around the corner. In fact, Black Panther will be debuting less than two weeks after the Super Bowl on February 4.
However, Black Panther is hardly in need of any additional buzz, as its tracking at a whopping $120 million opening weekend which is massive for a solo superhero film.
But again, that debut is less than two weeks ago and the public may need an additional reminder. Plus there’s a pricey deal at play with Lexus, so it’s a fair bet that we’ll see another trailer during the Super Bowl.
So there’s Avengers: Infinity War, which could go on to potentially become the biggest superhero movie of all time. Pretty much anybody with any familiarity with the Marvel Cinematic Universe will turn up to see this one in early May. The trailer smashed records on YouTube, and is one of the most anticipated movies in history.
Does Disney really need to drop millions more to promote it?
No, my money is on us finally seeing the trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story. There’s been precious little information on the movie thus far, and its only a few months away. How better to ramp up the hype for Han than by dropping an amazing trailer during the Super Bowl?
Disney needs to get fans who felt burnt by The Last Jedi back on board, and how better than to tease a return to form with arguably the franchise’s most beloved character?
The longer Disney waits to release more information on Han Solo, the more rumors will circulate about a lack of faith in the project.
Let’s hope the naysayers are wrong.[Source: Deadline]
