Walt Disney Imagineer, Kevin Rafferty, To Retire After 42 Years!

Imagineer Kevin Rafferty has announced his retirement. The 42-year Disney veteran announced his retirement in a post on the D23 website. Affective, April 1st.


Rafferty’s most recent project was Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, helping oversee development of the project. What a send off!

 

Rafferty Started like anyone else in an entry level position.

Rafferty started his Disney career working as a dishwasher in Disneyland’s Plaza Inn. After seeing a recruitment poster for WED Enterprises (or “Walt Disney Imagineering”) at the Disneyland costume window, he took a chance, nailed down an interview, and it launched him into a 4 decade career with the Mouse. Now, he has decided to end on a high note. Rafferty told D23 in an exclusive exit interview that “It feels like it’s time.”

 After writing his bookMagic Journey: My Fantastical Walt Disney Imagineering Career (Side note: I read this, it’s a fantastic read!) and the opening of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, a first of it’s kind to feature the famous Mouse couple. Rafferty said in the same interview, “I wanted to go out at the top of my game. . .It just felt right.”

 

His entry level position propelled him into a long and impressive career.

Over his very impressive career with The Disney Company, he became a seasoned creative executive at Imagineering. Working on the show writing and creative direction for multiple popular attractions such as Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Cars Land at California Adventure Park, Toy Story Midway Mania!Test TrackRock ‘n’ Roller CoasterThe Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ and so much more.

Rafferty will leave his legacy behind as he moves on to his next chapter. He finishes to say to D23: “When I started, there were only two Disney parks in the world. It’s really been my honor, my pleasure, and my joy to be around and watch the expansion of the magic that Walt Disney Imagineering has made . . . I’ve been there for all that. It’s been an amazing ride.”
