The current rumor to hit Star Wars is that Billy Dee Williams is returning as Lando Calrissian for Star Wars Episode IX. Filming is to begin soon on the next installment.
Rumors began to swirl after Mr. Williams cancelled his appearance at a recent convention citing a conflict with a filming schedule. The Hollywood Reporter posted last night that “sources confirmed” that he was returning to the Star Wars franchise for the third film in the latest trilogy.
I’m sure Lucasfilms want to keep an original cast member in each film, and since they killed off Han and Luke, and Carrie Fisher has passed away, it makes sense to bring in Lando. It also makes sense to do this after they recent Solo: A Star Wars Movie film that brought Lando back to the forefront of the Star Wars universe.
Of course nothing has yet been confirmed by Lucasfilms or Billy Dee Williams, but it’s probably true and makes sense.
Hopefully Lando will survive this film. When they made the original trilogy, the story is that he and the Millennium Falcon were not supposed to make it out of the Death Star, but that was changed. Personally, I don’t think they will destroy the Falcon, not with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge having the upcoming attraction. Plus, after fans have lost Han and Luke, I think taking out the Falcon, which almost seems like a living character at this point, would be too much. So who knows.
