The OC Register reports that a pair of Disneyland unions are calling upon more than 17,000 cast members to protest the proposed July 17th reopening of Disney’s Anaheim theme parks out of concern for employee safety. The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions and Unite Here Local 11 are hosting a Disney Caravan for Safety on Saturday, June 27th that will encircle the shuttered Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks.
Disneyland, California Adventure and Downtown Disney have all been closed since Mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has proposed reopening the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks on July 17th pending government approval. Downtown Disney is set to re-open on July 9th while the Disney’s Grand Californian and Disney’s Paradise Pier hotels will reopen on July 23rd.
The Disneyland cast member caravan route will be traveling by car around Katella Avenue, Disneyland Drive, Ball Road and Harbor Boulevard on Saturday between 10 a.m. and noon.
“We’re not yet satisfied that it’s safe to open Disneyland,” according to CRLU and Unite Here. “Join us and speak up for safety.”
The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions sent a letter demanding that California Gov. Gavin Newsom stop Disney’s Anaheim theme parks from reopening on July 17th out of concern for employee safety. Disneyland has already begun recalling furloughed cast members to prepare the parks for re-opening.
“The safety and well-being of our cast members and guests are at the forefront of our planning, and we look forward to continued dialogue with our unions on the extensive health and safety protocols, following guidance from public health experts, which we plan to implement as we move toward our proposed, phased reopening,” a Disneyland official said in a statement.
