Disney-owned Lucasfilm has just announced plans for a brand new Star Wars trilogy.
The new trilogy will apparently have nothing to do with the current “Skywalker Saga” of Episodes I-IX. Instead it is supposed to take place in a previously unexplored section of that galaxy far, far away.
At the helm of the new trilogy is director Rian Johnson, director of the upcoming The Last Jedi.
Lucasfilm is excited to announce that Johnson will create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy, the first of which he is also set to write and direct, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce.
As writer-director of The Last Jedi, Johnson conceived and realized a powerful film of which Lucasfilm and Disney are immensely proud. In shepherding this new trilogy, which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
Currently there is no additional information on the plot of characters of this new trilogy. Rumors have been circulating that Disney had planned a trilogy based on the Old Republic, among other things, after the Star Wars sequel trilogy wraps up.
Given that Disney is all about “brand synergy” these days, another interesting thought would be if the new trilogy somehow tied into the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
It’s unknown whether or not an additional “Saga” trilogy will happen at some point in the future, or even if Episode IX will leave the door open for the possibility.
Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi warps into theaters on December 15, 2017.
