It’s been announced today that Carrie Fisher will appear in the upcoming Star Wars Episode IX film.
Known for playing Leia Organa, Fisher passed away after filming The Last Jedi. But her character lived to move onto the last film. She will be in the final installment of the trilogy using previously shot footage from The Force Awakens.
Director J.J. Abrams had this to say:
We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.
Besides this announcment the studio has confirmed that Billy Dee Williams will be back as Lando Calrissian and Mark Hamill will be returning as well. Force ghost? Flash backs? I know some are hoping he didn’t really die, but only time will tell.
Other returning cast members are:
Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.
Star Wars Episode IX is set to begin filming on August 1, 2018 at Pinewood Studios in London. Currently the film has a scheduled release date of December 20, 2019.
