Warning: Cruella spoilers ahead!
Insiders, what did you think of the Cruella movie starring Emma Stone? I personally thought Disney did an amazing job with the film and it blew my expectations out of the water. I was not a huge fan of other the other villain movie Disney has done before (Maleficent) so I did not have very high expectations with this film. However, between Emma Stone’s beyond amazing acting job with Cruella, the fantastic music choices, the rocking fashion, etc., I was thoroughly impressed with how good the movie was. Disney did a great job with showing how Estella turned into Cruella, why she has a dislike towards Dalmations (due to her mother’s death), and the plot twist at the end with the Baroness being her real mother (which is how she inherits so much money) was all so cleverly done. While the movie itself did not fully show how Cruella de Vil finally snaps into becoming a full on evil villain, we are able to see how she inherited De Vil Manor (aka Hell Hall), how Horace and Jasper become her side kicks, and how she becomes a major fashion designer (Stone set up Glenn Close’s Cruella story very nicely).
Since the film has premiered Disney fans all over the world flocked to the theaters or purchased the premiere access on Disney+ opening weekend to see Cruella. The film has earned $48.5 million globally. It has received positive reviews and has been praised for its 1970s punk rock aesthetic. It has done so well at the box office that The Hollywood Reporter has shared that Disney is now in development to make a Cruella sequel!
“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”
But wait, wouldn’t the sequel be 101 Dalmations? If you caught the end scene after the credits you know that Cruella gifted both Roger and Anita each a Dalmation puppy. This doesn’t really fall in line with the original story in either the animated or previous live-action 101 Dalmations movie, so it will be interesting to see where Disney will take the sequel. Disney could elaborate more into Cruella’s story with how she starts her own fashion line, how she snaps and loses some more of her humanity (to the point of wanting to skin puppies for their coats), and how her relationship with Roger and Anita progresses. The ideas are endless with where Disney could take the sequel but I’m sure whatever they do it will be just as amazing as the first, especially if Emma Stone and the original cast return!
Cruella director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for a sequel to the film that stars Stone as fan-favorite One Hundred and One Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil.
