Disney fans love to debate attraction closures, restaurant changes, and entertainment cuts. But there’s one experience that quietly deserves protection: the character meet-and-greets outside the Walt Disney Studios courtyard.
It may not be the flashiest part of the park, but I genuinely believe Disney would make a mistake by moving or eliminating these encounters.
It Makes the Park Feel Alive
One of the biggest reasons these character appearances work is because they don’t feel overly staged. As you’re walking toward your next attraction, you suddenly spot beloved Disney characters greeting guests in an open, welcoming space. That kind of spontaneity is part of Disney’s magic.
You never know what will happen when you visit this part of the park. In 30 minutes there, we experienced Rapunzel playing hide & seek and her having story time, Goofy pouring “water” on us, Chip & Dale doing a relay race with Rapunzel and Mulan and kids, and Stitch + Donald walking around interacting with everyone, too.
Not every character interaction needs to happen inside a dedicated building or behind elaborate scenery! We *think* the plan is for them to move these characters inside when the Magic of Disney Animation building opens later this summer at Hollywood Studios. BUT, we think these characters or other characters should stay outside because it’s magic!
It Gives the Courtyard a Purpose
The Walt Disney Studios courtyard has always served as more than just a walkway. Character greetings transform it into a destination rather than a place guests rush through.
Without the characters, the area risks feeling like little more than another stretch of pavement between attractions. The meet-and-greets create energy, excitement, and reasons for guests to slow down.
That’s something every theme park needs.
Not Every Meet-and-Greet Needs a Long Wait
One thing I appreciate about these outdoor greetings is their accessibility. While some character experiences attract massive lines, these encounters often feel more relaxed.
Families can spot who’s appearing from a distance, decide if they’d like to stop, and continue on with their day if they don’t.
That flexibility makes the experience less stressful, especially for guests with young children.
It Adds Charm That Can’t Be Replaced
Disney is constantly evolving, and change is inevitable. New attractions, updated lands, and refreshed entertainment are all part of keeping the parks exciting.
But not every improvement requires replacing something that’s already working.
Sometimes it’s the simple traditions that leave the biggest impression. Watching children light up when they see a favorite character waving from across the courtyard or playing hide & seek reminds you that Disney isn’t only about blockbuster attractions. It’s also about creating small moments that guests remember long after they return home.
My Opinion
If Disney is looking for ways to refresh its parks, I’d encourage the company to build around these character experiences—not remove them. The Walt Disney Studios courtyard needs the personality and warmth that these character interactions provide every single day. Sometimes a classic character greeting in the right location does exactly what Disney has always done best: create joy through simple, personal moments.
