Tony Baxter, Disney Legend and Imagineer, spent his career working on some of Disney’s most iconic rides, including Splash Mountain and EPCOT’s Journey Into Imagination With Figment.
Baxter made an appearance at [email protected], a student organization at the University of Southern California dedicated students interested in the themed entertainment industry, and said he would come out of retirement to redo the iconic Disney World ride.
Baxter stated, “I just wish we could do that ride over. I would come back out of retirement to do that ride over.”

Thanks so much to everyone who attended our panel with Tony Baxter and Tom Morris last night! We had such an amazing time discussing the evolution of theme parks with these two iconic Imagineers. Scott Gustin shared this Tweet about Baxter’s statement:
Baxter’s comment (of course) is getting traction — but it’s the equivalent of someone saying “I would work for free” to make something happen. Baxter was simply saying he thinks a redo is necessary. It was certainly an interesting comment – but it’s really nothing more than that.

Gustin also stated he believes that Baxter was simply saying he thinks it’s necessary for the Figment attraction to get a refurb.
The idea of the legendary Imagineer coming back to work wouldn’t be totally out of the realm of possibility. It has already been confirmed that Baxter will contribute to the Splash Mountain redesign.
When the EPCOT theme park overhaul was announced at the 2019 D23 Expo, many Walt Disney World fans were hoping that a Figment refresh would be coming down the pipeline. Journey Into Imagination With Figment has not, however, been mentioned in any official Walt Disney Company announcements regarding the EPCOT renovation.
The official description of the Future World ride currently reads:
The Institute’s beleaguered chairman Dr. Nigel Channing (played by Eric Idle) sets out to prove how the 5 senses capture the imagination—but he’s upstaged by the mischievous Figment!
Prepare for surprises galore as you travel through a series of vivid, whimsical sensory labs. Learn about all 5 senses as Figment turns the lab upside down and causes quite a stink in the Smell Lab.
Let your imagination run wild on this marvelous, madcap musical adventure!’
As Figment says, “Imagination works best when it’s set free! Just turn your imagination loose, and anything can happen!”
