This year’s runDisney Marathon weekend ushered in thouands of runners (many competing for the first time), celebrties and extreme humidity. Weather conditions only worsened as the weekend went on, causing race officials to issue a heat advisory and even alter the marathon race course.
But nothing could break former Giants Running Back, Tiki Barber’s stride, not even the weather. Tiki finished the Walt Disney World Marathon in 5 hours and 12 minutes. To you and I, that seems like a great time- but Tiki’s personal best was in November during the NYC Marathon. He completed it with a time of 4:18:24.
When asked by an Orlando Sentinal journalist how he felt, Tiki had this to say;
“I knew after a mile that I was going to be in trouble,” Barber said of the hot and humid conditions. I’ve never had a non-finish, I was telling myself, `I am not going to not finish. I am not going to not finish.”
Barber is about 30lbs lighter than he was playing in the NFL and he spoke about how his body reacts differently to running long distances since his post-NFL career.
“I feel worn — not bruised, just worn,” Barber said. “My muscles are cramping, and it takes a long time to recover. It takes fluids, a lot of fluids to recover, whereas in football, I don’t know. It was just bruising, but you still felt invigorated. When I get through a marathon, I feel exhausted.”
I don’t blame him! I ran the 10k on Friday morning and still feel worn, I can only imagine a full marathon! There were 14,106 finishers on Sunday. The next weekend for runDisney is Princess Weekend in February and then Star Wars Rival Run in April.
