Along with their parks and resorts across the globe, Disneyland and Walt Disney World have been closed for weeks, due to the coronavirus. Even with the gates to their parks shuttered, the work inside continues.
A team of Animal Care Specialists continues to work and care for the park’s 2,000 animals. Animals are even having babies, a new zebra named Asha, was born on March 21st (just 5 days after the park closed to the public).
Along with the animals, Disney World has a wide variety of flora that needs to be taken care of. The property in Flordia spans across 40 square miles (roughly the same size as San Fransisco), and with that comes the many acres of landscape that need to be maintained. Teams are still maintaining the topiaries, many of which are trimmed to look like various Disney characters. At Easter, the team donated all the Disney-grown Easter lilies to local senior citizens. Normally, these lilies would have been used to decorate the resort for the holiday.
Since making the decision to temporarily suspend Disney Cruise Line departures, Crew Members have been working on a series of Disney VoluntEARS events focused on what they do best – making others smile with a dose of Disney magic. They’ve teamed up with several organizations, including the Foundation for Hospital Art and the Starlight Children’s, to bring some pixie dust to those who need it most.
Perhaps the most important work being done over the last few weeks has been the amount of food Disney has donated to local food shelters. Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris have donated several tons of excess food from their parks to their local food shelters.
There’s comfort in knowing that even with their parks closed, Disney continues to make magic happen on a daily basis, across the globe!
