One of Disney California Adventure’s most popular festivals is back again, the Lunar New Year Festival! This is my personal favorite festival because I love Asian food, and there are so many festival booths full of really delicious Asian-inspired menu items. I was able to try some new food items at the festival this past weekend and have been so excited to share my review with you, Insiders. Keep reading below for my official review of 6 of the items I was able to try so you can decide what you want to try and skip!
The Sip and Savor pass is available this year; it costs $46, or $43 for Magic Key holders. Each pass includes 6 tastings, alcoholic beverages are not eligible, so you would have to purchase those separately. The Sip and Savor pass also works a bit differently this year. Instead of having tabs that you tear off for each food item, your pass will be scanned at each booth. You enter a pin # (shown on the back of your pass), and the item will be removed from your total. Each booth can tell you your balance if you forget.
Insider Tip: Don’t forget, if you know what items you want ahead of time, you can order ALL food items from one booth. They will hand you a receipt, which you will show at each pickup window at the booth your food item is at, and they will cross the food item off each time you redeem. This will save you so much time, so you don’t have to spend time in the order lines AND the pickup lines.
Also, new this year is the Tasting Passport. With your Sip and Savor pass, you will receive a booklet showing all the food items at each booth. Every time you visit a booth to pick up a food item, you can have your Tasting Passport stamped. This makes the experience a little more adventurous and fun!
And now, onto the food!
Wrapped with Love
Strawberry Milk Tea Macaron
Strawberry Buttercream with Milk Tea Center
This macaron is also new this year, and it’s the best dessert I’ve had at the festival (and I’ve had some good ones!). The buttercream does, in fact, taste like strawberry milk tea, and it’s so delicious and creamy. The only thing I was hesitant about was right in the middle, it seemed like there was a large boba, which I normally love, but in this dessert, I’m not so sure about it. If boba isn’t your thing, it’s only in the middle, and you can definitely eat around it. I also highly recommend this dessert option!
Red Dragon Spice Traders
Red Spice Fried Chicken Bites
Fried Chicken Chicharrones in spicy Red Chile Sauce
These red spice chicken bites are fire…literally! If you don’t like spice, just stay away from this booth in general. I love spice and have a high tolerance and these had even my nose leaking. These are just crispy delicious little bites, though and I highly recommend them. This also comes with quite a lot, so it’s definitely shareable!
Prosperity Bao & Buns
BBQ Pork Bun
with Kimchi Mayo and Garlic Chile Crunch
Another newcomer to the festival! I love bao and have heard many great things about this one. The bao is soft, the pork is tender, and the Kimchi Mayo and Garlic Chili Crunch are just really what completes this little appetizer. If you love bao, don’t miss out on trying this one!
Lucky 8 Lantern
with Guajillo Pepper Consomé
This is a returning favorite, and I had not had the chance to try this one in past years so I was excited to try it this year. This “little” eggroll certainly lives up to the hype, although it didn’t really seem like an Asian-inspired dish to me. The meat in this one is also tender and it’s full of cheesy goodness. This is not complete without the consomé though, so make sure to give it a good dunk if you try this one.
Longevity Noodle Co.
Shrimp Lo Mein Noodles
I’m just going to get right to it with this one. Disappointing! I LOVE Lo Mein noodles and was very excited to try this. There were some very strange flavors going on in this one, and the shrimp was very fishy. I would not eat this one again. This booth also has garlic noodles, which I’ve had in the past, and would highly recommend those over this one. Better luck next year with the noodles!
