Reports emerged Sunday night that an 18-year-old man was arrested after he broke into Disneyland, despite the park being shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic. The identity of the man was revealed to be Anaheim resident Jeremiah Smith.
According to Anaheim Police, the 18-year-old was first spotted by Disneyland security, as he was jumping over a gate into the back lot of the California Adventure theme park.
Anaheim PD said officers responded to the scene with an airship and located Smith around 11 p.m. near a construction site not far from the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction.
Sgt. Shane Carringer told the Daily News that, “It appears his intentions were the construction area. He never tried to penetrate deeper into the park.” Although some reports are saying the man broke into the park in an effort to steal park memorabilia and resell it on the Disney Black Market.
Breaking into the parks and taking merchandise isn’t unheard of. Walt Disney World has been dealing with that issue for years and went to trial at the end of 2019 against a former cast member because of it.
