Is company mascot Mickey Mouse finally getting his own attraction in Walt Disney World?
It’s very possible, but it might come at the expense of The Great Movie Ride in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
A few weeks ago, we reported that The Great Movie Ride might be another casualty of the massive re-imagining going on at Hollywood Studios. One of the rumored replacements for the attraction is a Mickey Mouse themed ride (codenamed “DHS Project M“), and it looks as if there’s some evidence of this coming to pass.
Len Testa (author of the The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World) tweeted that here’s hearing the same thing…
Hearing Great Movie Ride will close for a Mickey attraction.
Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and by Summer 2018. pic.twitter.com/agDejv5oVR

There’s also been a notice of commencement filed for work on “DHS Project M” the parcel where The Great Movie Ride sits (photo: Chip and Co.).
From what we’ve been hearing, the facade and show building would remain in place, but the attraction would be completely re-themed (think Journey Into Imagination… just hopefully much better!)
Nothing has officially been announced yet, but it’s possible that Disney will announce an overhaul of The Great Movie Ride at this year’s D23 Expo.
Fans Petition to Save ‘The Great Movie Ride’
Fan reaction to the possible closing of The Great Movie Ride has varied. Some feel the ride is very dated, while many others feel its the heart and soul of Hollywood Studios and needs to stay as-is.
There’s a petition on Change.org urging Disney to rethink their plans. If you’d like to keep the current iteration of The Great Movie Ride, you can sign the petition here.
The current rumor says that The Great Movie Ride will permanently close this fall, so you may want to take one last ride through the golden age of Hollywood while you still can.
