Our Favorite Ways to Spend Summer in Southern California

If you ask us what our favorite time of year is in Southern California, the answer is easy—summer!

There’s just something special about this time of year. The days are long, the sunshine seems endless, and whether you’re relaxing on the beach, exploring a theme park, or sipping wine in the vineyards, there’s no shortage of incredible experiences. One of the best parts about Southern California is that you can spend the morning at the ocean, the afternoon at a winery, and the evening watching fireworks over Disneyland…all in the same day (although we do recommend taking your time enjoying each activity)!

If you’re planning a summer getaway, here are a few of our absolute favorite things to do.

Spend the Day at Universal Studios Hollywood

If you’re a movie lover or thrill-seeker, Universal Studios Hollywood is always at the top of our list.

From stepping behind the scenes on the famous Studio Tour to experiencing attractions like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, and heart-pounding rides inspired by blockbuster films, there’s something for every member of the family.

Summer is also one of the best times to catch seasonal entertainment and enjoy the park with extended operating hours. We always recommend arriving early and having a game plan so you can fit in as much as possible.

Beach Hop Along the Southern California Coast

One of the biggest perks of visiting Southern California in the summer is having so many incredible beaches to choose from.

Los Angeles Beaches

If you’re looking for the classic California beach experience, head to Santa Monica or Manhattan Beach. Walk the iconic Santa Monica Pier, rent bikes along the beach path, or simply relax and watch the sunset.

Orange County Beaches

Orange County is home to some of our favorites. Huntington Beach earns its nickname “Surf City USA” with its laid-back atmosphere, while Newport Beach offers beautiful waterfront views, fantastic dining, and opportunities for whale watching during parts of the year. Laguna Beach is perfect if you’re looking for scenic coves, tide pools, and stunning coastal views.

San Diego Beaches

San Diego has a completely different beach vibe that’s hard not to love. Coronado Beach is consistently ranked among the best beaches in the country, while La Jolla offers incredible ocean views, sea lions, and opportunities to kayak through sea caves. Mission Beach is another favorite if you’re looking for a lively boardwalk atmosphere.

Honestly, one of our favorite summer days is simply grabbing shrimp tacos, finding a spot on the sand, and enjoying the ocean breeze.

Spend an Afternoon Wine Tasting in Temecula

Many visitors are surprised to learn that Southern California has an incredible wine country.

Temecula is just about an hour from many Southern California destinations and offers dozens of beautiful wineries surrounded by rolling vineyards. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a relaxing afternoon away from the crowds, wine tasting in Temecula is one of our favorite hidden gems.

Many wineries also feature live music, outdoor patios, excellent restaurants, and even hot-air balloon rides offering breathtaking views of wine country.

Make Magical Memories at Disneyland Resort

It wouldn’t be a Southern California summer without spending time at Disneyland Resort!

Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, there’s always something new to discover. From beloved attractions and incredible entertainment to seasonal treats and nighttime spectaculars, Disneyland has a way of making every trip feel unique.

Summer is an especially fun time to visit, with longer park hours and plenty of opportunities to soak in the magic from morning until late at night. We love slowing down enough to enjoy the little moments—grabbing a snack on Main Street, watching the Disneyland Band perform, or ending the evening with fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Disney Fans: Don’t Miss D23 Expo Years

If you’re a Disney fan planning a Southern California vacation, it’s worth checking whether your trip falls during a D23 Expo year.

Held every other August in Anaheim, D23 is Disney’s ultimate fan event, bringing together fans from around the world for a weekend filled with exciting announcements, exclusive presentations, celebrity appearances, shopping, exhibits, and behind-the-scenes looks at everything Disney—including Disney Parks, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and more.

It’s an unforgettable experience for Disney enthusiasts and can easily become the highlight of a Southern California vacation. If you’re already planning a Disneyland trip during a D23 year, adding the Expo to your itinerary is something you’ll never forget.

Why We Love Southern California in the Summer

There’s a reason so many people dream about a Southern California vacation.

The weather is one of the biggest reasons. Summer days are typically warm, sunny, and perfect for spending time outdoors. Evenings often cool off just enough to enjoy outdoor dining, stroll along the beach, or watch fireworks without feeling too hot.

It’s the kind of destination where every day can look completely different. One day you’re riding roller coasters, the next you’re relaxing by the ocean, exploring charming coastal towns, or sipping wine in Temecula.

That’s what keeps us coming back time and time again.
