For as long as I can remember, one of my favorite treats in all of Walt Disney World has been the Peanut Butter and Jelly Milkshake at 50’s Prime Time Café at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. It is the perfect blend of sweet and rich! I always strategically get it after I check all my thrill ride fast passes off my list so I can truly enjoy it.

Fun Fact: This recipe was created in 1989 when a group of chefs were carrying out a menu tasting for 50’s Prime Time Café restaurant. Since its creation, it’s become a mainstay in the park and popular fan favorite! In fact, the restaurant sold more than 27,000 of these in 2016! It’s a recipe I have loved making at home as well.

See how they make it in the park in the video below!
Since the original recipe calls for ice cream, jelly, milk and peanut butter, a lighter, more “everyday” snack version has been on my list to find! Disney Parks came out with a DIY Peanut Butter n’ Jelly shake featuring whole strawberries in place of jelly. Check out that video below!
The switch from jelly to whole strawberries made the beverage a little easier on the stomach from the reduction in added sugar, but the ice cream still made it more of a dessert. Now, I am quite a big Disney Dessert fan, that is for sure! However, as many of you might guess, as a Dietitian, I like fitting in more whole Disney snacks that I can eat any time and not JUST for dessert! Enter: my Disney Parks -Inspired Peanut Butter n’ Jelly Smoothie recipe!

Here, I swap out the vanilla ice cream for vanilla Greek yogurt, adding more protein, and bonus – probiotics for gut health and immune support (1, 2, 3)! The whole strawberries that replace jelly are an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant necessary for immune and skin health, offering even more benefit to this magical beverage (4, 5)! That’s right, with my Peanut Butter n’ Jelly Smoothie, you actually get some health benefits from drinking it daily (should you wish to do so).
