Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Rumor: Redd to Replace Jack Sparrow in Reboot?

Could the recently introduced Redd the female pirate from the Disneyland be taking over for Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow in the sixth POTC movie? And could Pirates 6 be a complete reboot, and not a sequel?

If you still wants the Redhead, you might be getting a lot more of her.

A website called Hybrid News claims they’ve gotten a tip that this is being discussed at Disney. Here’s more…

We are hearing from multiple sources that Disney is indeed ready to part ways with Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow character that has led the franchise over the last 5 films.  We are also hearing the studio is looking to center the franchise on Redd, the recently revamped character in the popular Disneyland attraction who is also a meet-in-greet park character.

Now it should be noted that a script is not finished, and things can CERTAINLY change. That being said Disney already has multiple female led blockbusters in the works such as Captain Marvel hitting theaters next March, The standalone Black Widow movie, and Maleficent II. So it would make sense and would be a fresh take for Disney to make this change for a Pirates franchise that was starting to get tiresome with Depp in the lead.

Now, we haven’t heard anything official from Disney regarding the direction of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, but it is being rumored that Jack Sparrow might be completely retired in favor of a new cast.

Surely this would disappoint a lot of Pirates fans, especially overseas. While the popularity of the Pirates films have been waning in the U.S., Depp is still a huge draw in countries like China.

Why Would Disney Replace Johnny Depp?

After his well publicized domestic dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp is a controversial figure in Hollywood right now. And with his box office appeal seemingly on the decline, Disney may just want to take the franchise in a new direction altogether.

Why Would Disney Use Redd?

Redd the Pirate (formerly the Redhead of the retired Wench Auction scene) has been controversial among oldschool Disney fans, to say the least. However, it’s possible that Disney had another motivation for bringing Redd into the ride other than “political correctness.” It could be that Redd was always designed with movies in mind.

If this is true, it wouldn’t be the first time “Redd” would be featured in a Pirates movie. In The Curse of the Black Pearl, the Redhead was referred to as “Scarlett.” She was subsequently featured in the short “Wedlocked.”

Of course, this is all speculation and rumor at this point. No clear course has been set for what Pirates of the Caribbean 6 would even be about (even though the fifth film teased a reappearance by Davy Jones.)

When will Pirates of the Caribbean 6 come out?

No release date has been set for the next Pirates movie, as it is still in the screenwriting phase. It’s unknown if it will be a sequel, a reboot or a soft reboot.

I've loved Disney as long as I can remember. As a former newspaper editor, web developer, and Disney comics freelancer, I'm able to combine that experience into writing about Disney online. I'm also the co-host of a Disney fan podcast called 'Pirates & Princesses.' Opinions mine.
