It was Mother’s Day, and the last day of our weekend in Walt Disney World. We had a wonderful few days at Disney’s Yacht Club, and although we were traveling home that afternoon, we decided to get up and take a walk over to The Boardwalk.
You might call me a “foolish mortal,” but I totally had an idea in my head of grabbing a cup of coffee and some bakery items from The Boardwalk Bakery, and just taking in the gorgeous views from The Boardwalk. My boys, ages 4 and 5, had their own plans.
All it took was one look at the Surrey Bikes and they wanted to ride. How quickly that idea of a peaceful Mother’s Day morning vanished from my mind. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned about doing Disney World with little ones, its that you just have to channel your inner Elsa and “let it go.” I’m constantly letting go of any expectations I had of how a day will go or what our plans will be. You can try to plan out every detail of your Walt Disney World vacation, but often times you’re so busy trying to create these magical memories , you often miss out on the best kind of memories. It’s been my experience that the memories you didn’t plan to make, are the best ones.
So this mommy “let it go,” and decided she would spend her Mother’s Day morning pedaling her children around on a bike! To my surprise, the Surrey Bike was a great time. I’d even go as far to say that, it was one of the highlights of our weekend. The cost to rent a Surrey Bike is $25 for 30 minutes.
I will say this, 30 minutes does not go quick, you will have more than enough time and it ended up being 2 complete laps around The Boardwalk area. I’ve read posts where people manage to get up to 4 laps in, it’s all about your pace and how fast or slow you want to go. The boys were so excited when we put them in the front seats! I would say kids between the age of 2-6 are the perfect age for this experience because they are comfortable in those front seats and get to see everything from such a unique viewpoint.
Although there are two steering wheels, the one to the left actually steers the bike and controls the brake. My husband, aka- the “driver,” took control of our bike and we were off! Luckily, we were wearing sneakers. Although you can certainly pedal the bike in sandals, I do recommend wearing athletic shoes. It’s a flat surface area for most of the trail, but there are the two bridges over the water ways, so you will have to put in some work at the bridges and athletic shoes make it that much easier. The kids enjoyed taking in the views and ringing the bell, which let pedestrians know we were coming up behind them.
Surrey Bikes are also available to rent at Caribbean Beach, Old Key West, Port Orleans Riverside, Saratoga Springs, and the Wilderness Lodge Resorts. I’m a big advocate for experiencing what your resort has to offer, and the Surrey Bikes are at the very top of my list. I would certainly rent one again, and I’m thankful for the unplanned memory it created for my family.
