“A team isn’t a bunch of kids out to win. A team is something you belong to, something you feel, something you have to earn.”- Coach Gordon Bombay
If that quote doesn’t bring back some 90’s Disney nostalgia, I don’t know what does. It was announced that Emilio Estevez will reprise the role of Gordon Bombay, which he played in the original “Mighty Ducks” movies. The reboot will be exclusive to Disney+.
“Once a Duck, always a Duck!”
Estevez was quoted as saying. Adding to the conversation, the actor also had this to say on reprising his iconic role;
“After 25 years, I am delighted to lace up my skates, put on Coach Bombay’s jacket and return to play the iconic character for this new chapter in the ‘Mighty Ducks’ franchise. Likewise, I am thrilled to return to my old stomping grounds with my friends at Disney and Steve Brill, the original creator of the franchise, to join them on their exciting new platform, Disney Plus.”
The new “Mighty Ducks” takes place in present day, in the state of Minnesota. If that sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The location was the same in the original movie, where the Mighty Ducks went from the scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. New characters and story lines will be introduced, as well. After 12-year-old Evan (Brady Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom Alex (Lauren Graham) set out to build their own ragtag team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of competitive youth sports.
Agnes Chu, Senior Vice President of Content for Disney Plus had this to say;
“It was an easy decision to bring back the Quack Attack with a modern and fresh twist. For a generation, ‘The Mighty Ducks’ stood for teamwork, friendship, and heart and we’re excited to see the Ducks fly together once again and bring the franchise to new audiences around the world. We are thrilled to have Emilio Estevez reprising his iconic role.”
We’re thrilled to! I’ve had so many mixed emotions about reboots and animated classics being made into live-action films, but this is the kind of reboot I can get excited about. Steve Brill, who created the original franchise, on board as co-creator and executive producer.
