Last year, Disney announced that they were planning to reboot its Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The latest news is that Disney is eyeing Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Karen Gillan to star in the project.
Walt Disney Studios has made it clear that the reboot of the franchise would be much different than the original films. For one, the man who made Captain Jack Sparrow come to life, Johnny Depp, will most likely not be cast in the new film. For a while, there were reports that Disney was looking at Zac Efron to take on the role of the rum-loving pirate, but nothing has been confirmed.
Another rumor is that the studio was hoping to reboot the franchise with a female lead, and if they are looking into casting Gillan, that could be the case. I, for one, would love to see her cast as the red-head pirate from the original attraction.
The film is currently being written by Craig Mazan, the creator of HBO’s successful mini-series, Chernobyl. Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, is also writing alongside Mazan. Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are both signed on to produce with the studio still searching for a director to helm the project.
What do you think about the idea of a female lead, and do you have any suggestions as to any other actresses who might fit the role? How about the fact that there’s still no Johnny Depp? I’m not sure how I feel about Pirates without Depp.
