Is The Great Movie Ride in Walt Disney World going to close forever this fall?
That’s the rumor, according to this thread on WDW Magic. The word is that because TCM’s sponsorship is up in 2018, Disney may permanently shutter it as part of their massive overhaul of Hollywood Studios. The most recent timetable given by insiders? Late summer or early fall.
It’s unclear what the plan is for The Great Movie Ride. Rumors include a new park icon for whatever Hollywood Studios becomes after its Star Wars and Toy Story overhaul. Other rumors say the facade will stay in place, but that a brand new attraction will inhabit the show building behind it.
Of course, nothing has been officially announced by Disney… yet. Whatever the case may be, plans are afoot for The Great Movie Ride. If you’re going to Walt Disney World this summer, you may want to make time for it. It may be the last time you ride it in its current incarnation.

I love The Great Movie Ride & it’s one of the few rides in HS that people with disabilities can actually ride, being that so many of the rides in that park aren’t suitable for persons who have disabilities. I took my Mom on it for her first time back in December and she was enamored with the whole thing. This just can’t go! It’s just too much of an institution in HS Park and, again, one of only a very few rides that we, with disabilities are able to enjoy!
I liked it, but to keep people coming back year after year, it needs to be either updated with different movie sets ir something new entirely.
It’s time to go. It’s a last generation attraction. It can still have a Hollywood theme but, surely the Imagineers can come up with something new.
Please don’t get rid of The Great Movie Ride. I love all the movie classics, and this ride represents them so well. It captures some of the greatest productions in Hollywood history.
