REVIEW – ‘Backstage Magic’ Tour in Walt Disney World #BackstageMagic

0

Many Walt Disney World guests don’t realize that Disney offers many opportunities for “extra magic” via behind-the-scenes tours and other special events.

Last week we participated in the Backstage Magic media event at Walt Disney World, which was presented by Adventures by Disney.

Backstage Magic takes guests on a whirlwind VIP tour of, well, the backstage magic of Walt Disney World. The 7 hour tour takes guests on a guided tour of such beloved attractions as the American Adventure, and through the “worst kept secret in all of Disney.” That would be the mysterious city underneath the Magic Kingdom, the Utilidor!

How Much Does the Backstage Magic Tour Cost?

At $275 per person, the Backstage Magic tour includes refreshments, lunch and enough Disney factoids to blow the mouse ears right off your head, thanks to some incredibly knowledgeable tour guides! For this tour, ours were Pieter and Amber — and they were awesome. (Thanks guys!)

What to Expect

We experienced the tour on February 20, 2018. We were taken by chartered bus from location to location. It included six main stops:

  • The American Adventure in Epcot
  • Creative Costuming
  • Textile Services
  • Lunch at Whispering Canyon Cafe at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge
  • Central Shops
  • Magic Kingdom Utilidor

After June 1, however, we were told that some of the stops would change. Textile Services will be replaced with a behind-the-scenes look at Rivers of Light. Lunch would be moved to Tiffins. It’s unclear at this time if there will be a price increase.

No Photos, Please!

Since most of this tour takes place “backstage,” your opportunities to take photos will be limited. However, your guides will take souvenir photos of your journey at several stops.

What to Expect at Each Disney Backstage Magic Tour Stop

The American Adventure in Epcot
By far my favorite part of the tour, you get the rare opportunity to see how The American Adventure attraction works! I won’t spoil it for you, but it’s pretty incredible to see this in real life.

Creative Costuming
You won’t believe the amount of work and detail that goes into making the thousands and thousands of costumes in Walt Disney World. Eagle eyed Disney fans will even catch a glimpse of John Wayne from the Great Movie Ride who now resides in Creative Costuming!

Textile Services
It’s Disney’s laundromat, but it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Disney even does laundry differently than anybody else!

Central Shops
This is where the magic really happens. Central shops is where all Parks props and ride vehicles are built and maintain. You never know what you’ll see here! The photo opportunity is epic — you get snapped in front of the polar bear from the Maelstrom!

Magic Kingdom’s Utilidor
This is what most Disney fans really want to see — life underneath the Magic Kingdom!

Is Backstage Magic worth it?

In my opinion? Yes, this is must do for the diehard Disney Parks fan or for those who are just curious about day-to-day operations at the most magical place on Earth!

I've loved Disney as long as I can remember. As a former newspaper editor, web developer, and Disney comics freelancer, I'm able to combine that experience into writing about Disney online. I'm also the co-host of a Disney fan podcast called 'Pirates & Princesses.' Opinions mine.
